Hello, my name is Tia Shook. I am from Greensburg Pennsylvania, and I went to Greensburg Salem High School. I am excited to learn some new skills in this class that can help me with my future. The main thing I look forward to taking away from this class is becoming a better public speaker. This entails channeling my nervousness, becoming more confident in front of a group of people, as well as working on not using filler words. All in all, I feel this class well help me have a successful future in the career I would like to pursuit.

I decided to critique the speech by Admiral Mcraven about changing your life. Mcraven's speech was very inspirational and touched many people. He had strengths and a few weaknesses during his speech. Now we are first going to start off with his strengths. His first strength of his speech was he seemed very comfortable and had a good tone. I feel that he knew what he was talking about and although he may have been nervous speaking in front of all those people and cameras, he didn't show an ounce of nervousness. I feel that he also had a very strong attention-getter. He started off by saying starting your day off by making your bed is what everyone should do every day. I feel that it was kind of a funny attention-getter and seemed to tune everyone in. He had very few weaknesses during this speech. The only thing I could critique about his speech was at the beginning he told the crowd that he was going to be going over ten different stories. Each of these stories have their own l...

Dear future self, Although delivering a speech in front of people can be very intimidating and you may feel very vulnerable with everyone's eyes watching you speak, you are quite capable of doing it. It may take a little bit of practice but after getting more comfortable with it, you will find it will come easier and easier. Giving a speech is probably one of the most nerve-racking things for you at the moment, but doing things like practicing the speech before, channeling your nervous energy, thinking positively, etc. will over time help with your nervousness while giving a speech. Some things you should definitely practice to help you overcome your nervousness is knowing your topic well, being organized, and think of yourself as a messenger. You have given speeches before and remember the one thing that always helped was practicing the speech out loud. Practicing out loud gave me a lot more confidence going into the speech. Another thing that always helped me was rather than focu...

This week I chose animals being in shelters and being euthanized as my topic for a speech. Here are three attention getters: Story: There is an organization called Cross Your Paws that helps get animals out of shelters and find their forever homes before they're euthanized. In high school we do something called a senior project, for my senior project I helped plan fundraising events for them so they could raise money to help animals. They're a non profit organization so they rely on these fundraisers, which is why I decided to help them. My family also adopted one of our dogs from this organization and me and my family still help out with the organization.  Question: Have you ever consider ed adop ting an older dog that needs a home before they're euthanized? Stat:   Each year, approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized (390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats) (ASPCA, 2022)  Refrences      ASPCA. 2022.  Pet Statistics . [online] Available at: ...
